Canterbury fire crews on high alert as Christchurch reaches ‘well above average’ temperatures

Firefighters are on high alert as hot weather in Christchurch triggered unusually high temperatures for this time of year. Thermometers in the city peaked at 32.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday afternoon. High temperatures and rising winds on Wednesday were “perfect storm conditions for a bad fire”, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesperson said.
